Inmates can come and go, but incarcerated life goes on. There’s no meaty plot to keep the momentum going, nothing to fear and nobody to really invest in. We were only going to be pleased – the daring, funny, gloriously rule-breaking drama about the workings, official and otherwise, of a women’s prison has always been remarkably well written and supported by a quite extraordinary cast, made up largely of female actors. Maybe “suck” is too light a word.
So just why do fans re-watch the same episodes again and again?
She also reveals more on her relationship with the story’s protagonist Piper Chapman, which is played by actress Taylor Schilling.
The show noodles around with Judy King (Blair Brown), a newly incarcerated celebrity chef with a history of performing racist minstrel shows, as long as she can generate story. When it comes to Orange is the New Black; however, the release date and time are effectively pointless. Funny, sad, topical, with that Jenji Kohan trenchant style. It wasn’t the streaming platform’s cornerstone show – that honor went to House of Cards.
And that’s why it should have ended after one series.
Well, we’ve certainly seen Blanca grow as a character in the last two seasons. Judging by the first look of the season, it seems Alex will make it out of the catch 22 situation.
Season 3 left many fans wanting. Of course the more the character interacted with the “tribe”, the more we discover about everybody and about Blanca, as well. After throwing her lover/business partner Stella under the bus, becoming a crime boss and potentially putting Alex in life-threatening danger, she gave herself an infinity tattoo.
As season three of Orange is the New Black concluded, a large conglomerate of inmates, Poussey, Taystee, Morello and Crazy Eyes, among others, frolicked in a huge body of water located just outside the prison’s fence. But the season’s most compelling storyline came courtesy of Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning).
What this latest run of OITNB is, is a rawer and darker-than-before series that remains as fresh and binge-worthy as when it launched. Murder, drugs, race wars, corporatization, overcrowding, human-rights abuses – you’ll find all of that this fourth time around. Caputo ultimately sold out for a promotion, which doesn’t bode well for the prison’s (or its inmates’) future. You’re up against all these women who want to get the attention of this one suitor, and it’s harder for her, because she doesn’t have that cutthroat mentality like some of the other girls. Not only is she alive and well, she has also managed to forge pacts with several inmates who are desperate to save her.
Battered wife Bea Smith is sent to Wentworth prison to await her court hearings after she attempted to kill her abusive husband. It’s nice to see the show portraying older characters as actual people with actual sex drives and, gasp, a little bit of sass.
That’s the wonderful and frustrating thing about OITNB.
The prison CEO’s also walked out due to their discontentment with Litchfield’s new management, leaving Caputo (Nick Sandow) alone to handle everything. People are constantly flowing in and out of the bunks; best get used to it and move on.
Fans of the comedy-drama series will be happy to know Season 4 will not be the last, as the show has been renewed for three more seasons with Kohan on board.
