“It’s not a victory lap speech”, said Valerie Jarrett, one of Obama’s longest-serving aides. He returned to Chicago to deliver his farewell address and cap eight years in office in front of tens of thousands of supporters.

The speech was greeted by chants of “four more years”, but were dismissed by the President.

You’ve made me proud, and you’ve made the country proud.

Honoring the tradition of a peaceful transition of power, Mr. Obama assured the crowd that he was committed to helping President-elect Donald Trump achieve a smooth transition to the Oval Office.

The White House later commented that the 15-year-old stayed at home in Washington DC because she had a test at school the next day. Obama’s farewell address airs Tuesday, January 10, at 9 p.m. ET.

Brushing away tears, Obama paid tribute to the sacrifices made by his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, who were young girls when they entered the White House and leave as young women.

“But it will take a closer look and he’ll spend more time talking about what the President believes is necessary for us to confront the challenges that lie ahead”, he said. Those values include fairness and justice.

He said that more jobs have been created, America has built better relationships with other countries and gay people have been given the right to get married.

During the speech he said his frustrated efforts to end the use of torture and close the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were part of a broader move to uphold United States values. “I certainly wouldn’t rule out a discussion of some foreign policy topics”.

“My fellow Americans”, Obama said to cheers, “Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes we’ve received over the past few weeks”.

He said: “That’s what I wanted but it didn’t happen and I’m actually glad”.
