Authorities said Jackson traveled from his home in Baltimore last week, picking NY because he hoped to “make a statement” in the media capital of the world.
Jackson was arraigned on second-degree murder and weapons charges in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday, a day after he turned himself in to police.
“The defendant was motivated purely by hatred”, Iluzzi-Orbon said today. He stabbed Caughman twice, once in the heart and once in the back. Caughman went to a police precinct for help and was brought to Bellevue Hospital, where he died, police said. The sword was retrieved from a rubbish bin not far from the scene. Video surveillance footage captured him walking around the city. The cops believe he meant to commit more crimes but turned himself in after surveillance footage captured his face and his photo was shown on the news.
The NYPD confirmed to Huffington Post that Jackson was arrested and charged with murder. His Twitter bio describes him as a “bottle recycler, autograph collector” and a “good businessman”.
On Monday night, Jackson crossed paths with Timothy Caughman, a black man who was rummaging through garbage on a sidewalk in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, according to police.
Event organizer Sarah Rice said the objective of the event is for Hampden residents to “stand up for our neighbors and visitors of color to let them know they are loved and welcome in Hampden”.
“No act of violence can undermine who we are”.
Jackson’s lawyer suggested that his client might be suffering from mental illness. There, marchers say they’ll hold a moment of silence for victims of hate crimes.
“More than an unspeakable human tragedy, this is an assault on what makes this the greatest city in the world: our inclusiveness and our diversity”, de Blasio said. We are a nation of unrivaled strength because we are diverse. He spent the weekend in a Manhattan hotel before fatally stabbing Caughman on Monday. Many communities have been attacked in the era of Trump from Muslims, Transfolks, Black people and the Jewish community. We are a safe city because we are inclusive.
However, there were 5,818 hate crime incidents and 7,121 victims in in 2015 alone, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation stats. His profile picture shows him standing happily next to Beyoncé, his arm tucked around her. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and the Anti-Defamation League hosted a noontime rally at West 36th Street and Ninth Avenue to “denounce the brutal murder of Timothy Caughman“. He said it was just a practice run for a larger murder spree that targeted black men.
Some say the reaction to the two attacks reveals a double standard. “I hate black men”, he reportedly said.
Jackson turned himself in to police on Wednesday seeing his image circulated in media reports, according to a statement from the New York County District Attorney’s Office.
