“When you have won three Grand Slams, you don’t feel great on the court like today”.
Will Ferrell and John McEnroe interview Roger Federer of Switzerland after Federer won his first round match against Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia on day two of the 2018 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 16, 2018 in Melbourne, Australia. Federer, the defending champion, is the overwhelming favourite to repeat as victor at Melbourne Park and add Grand Slam title No. 20 to his illustrious career.
The man himself was cautious about his fitness on the eve of the tournament and wore a compression sleeve but there were no signs of rust as he eased to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 victory over American Young.
Meanwhile, Struff is trying to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
“I have a power game, which means I can hit it really hard”, he said. Federer, the second seed and the victor of last year’s event, made it through his opener against Aljaz Bedene, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Former No. 1-ranked Angelique Kerber, the 2016 Australian Open victor, continued her resurgent run with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Anna-Lena Friedsam to extend her streak to 10 consecutive wins.
Federer already has five Australian Open crowns to his name, and he looks in fine fettle as he goes in search of a sixth – which would see him equal Djokovic’s record in Melbourne. “I played flawless tennis in the first couple of sets and Donald came back in the third set”. Halep next plays 2014 Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.
“I’ve practised with him [Struff], and played against him in doubles and singles”, said Federer, in an on-court interview with former World No. 1 Jim Courier.
Federer’s amusing reply garnered the biggest applause yet, with the crowd whooping and whistling as he was able to finally match Ferrell’s banter. “I don’t drink any fluids except for I drink a lot of clam chowder”, he joked.
“My dog doesn’t even realise who I am, so, you know, nothing changes at home”.
The Swiss tennis legend gamely did his best to play along.
“So I have been walking through the streets dressed as numerous characters I have played in films, and people still aren’t recognising me”.
