Will Smith found it unpleasant to learn that the fat lady had sung on Steven Hiller, the character he played in 1996’s Independence Day.

“I was working on Suicide Squad during that time”, he said, referring to the film’s production. He and director Roland Emmerich talked about the project, but the scheduling prevented Hiller’s return. “It was awful when I found out my character died”, Smith told Yahoo.

Independence Day: Resurgence is set for a June 24, 2016 release. This interview makes it sound like he was considering it, but he couldn’t because it conflicted with Suicide Squad. Now, Smith has chose to share his thoughts on the fate of Hiller and how he expects to react to the upcoming sequel when he watches it.

Will Smith is now generating award buzz for his performance in the film Concussion, but the seasoned actor recently took time to reflect on one of the biggest characters of his career.

A news report on the website with the headline “Alien Tech Malfunction Kills Col. Hiller, ” reads: “While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller“. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an huge defense program to protect the planet. Online, Vivica A. Fox will reprise her role as Hiller’s wife and Jessie Usher will take on the role of his now grown-up son.

The first trailer for this summer’s forthcoming sci-fi action sequel Independence Day: Resurgence landed just before Christmas.
