Wintry mix expected early Wednesday morning

The weather service has issued a winter storm warning for almost the entire state that will stay in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 1 a.m Thursday.

The STORMTracker Weather Team says the storm will dump heavy snow across central Montana, beginning on Wednesday night. “At times, snowfall rates may approach 1″/hour, meaning the snow may pile up quickly. Significant accumulations by evening. Another inch of snow is possible in the Kansas City area before 11 p.m. Around an inch of snow is possible tonight.

Snow will likely begin shortly after daybreak tomorrow, and will quickly become steady with some moderate bursts. The advisory cautions people to be prepared for slippery roads, slow down and use caution while driving. Lows will be in the teens. “Widespread accumulations will range from 6-10″ with a few locations up to 12”.

This winter had been fairly quiet up until this week, as the first major winter storm of the season takes aim at the Stateline.

The snow will intensify through the late morning. A quarter of an inch or more of ice is expected to accumulate. When many Detroiters wake up and have breakfast or go to morning services, a coating to 2 inches of snow will be on the ground. A burst of snow then rain moves into southern New England Wednesday.

Snow chances last into the afternoon as an area of low pressure tracks through the area, and continually decrease to slight through Friday night into dawn Saturday. Temperatures stay chilly tomorrow with highs only in the mid-40s.
