Wlodarczyk shatters world record for hammer gold

Wlodarczyk screamed with glee as her third orb landed on Monday, seemingly knowing she’d done enough to beat her own world record of 81.08 meters without waiting for confirmation of the distance.

Hitchon had moved up into bronze medal position with 73.29m from her second throw but dropped down the field as the competition progressed.

At London in 2012, it was Lysenko who took gold ahead of Wlodarczyk. She’s had to fix it a few times but she said she’ll use it for the rest of her career.

The following month, reports in Italy and Russian Federation named Lysenko as being among dozens of athletes from the 2012 Olympics who had failed dope tests after the retesting of stored samples.

Whipping the hammer around her body eight times before launching it into the sunny morning sky, Wlodarczyk was screaming in delight before the ball even pitched on the grass of the infield, well beyond the 80 metre tape.

“I´’m so happy to win the gold medal 16 years after Kamila did it in Sydney”, Wlodarczyk said. “I didn’t expect that I would hold third, I just wanted to throw further”, the comparatively diminutive Hitchon said.

“This is the second time that I missed the world record”, said Jebet.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Teenager Ruth Jebet won Bahrain’s first ever Olympic gold medal Monday, blowing away the competition in the women’s 3,000 meters steeplechase but narrowly missing out on the world record.

Skolimowska died suddenly in 2009 at the age of 26 from a pulmonary emobolism.

This is Price’s first Olympics, but she’s no stranger to worldwide competition.
