A strength in batting was laid bare as Alex Hales (95) and Root (133 not out) anchored a chase of 306 at The Oval that rarely required England to move out of second gear, although Jason Roy’s (1) latest single-figure score will pose a selection headache moving forward. This was Bangladesh’s highest total ever against England and no side has ever successfully chased down 300+ total for victory in England.
Tamim had reached his ninth ODI century, in 124 balls, six overs earlier to the delight of the large Bangladeshi contingent in the Oval crowd.
England coach Trevor Bayliss has insisted that the tournament hosts will stick with their aggressive approach during the Champions Trophy despite a chastening defeat by South Africa.
That is exactly what happened after the home team lost out-of-form opener Roy in the third over.
“Jason Roy is part of our strong opening partnership with Alex Hales, and he’ll definitely play”.
Root’s two off Mortaza took him to a 10th ODI hundred in 115 balls with six fours.
(On the reason to omit Mehedi Hasan) It was the first match so we thought we could go with 8 batsmen but we will have to think about it.
REUTERS addsRoot, hobbling between the wickets, manoeuvred the ball around calmly and he and Morgan were always in control of the chase in an unbroken partnership of 143. While the spectators witnessed some flamboyant batting from both sides, they also got to see an on-field heated exchange of words between Iqbal and English all-rounder Ben Stokes. It was a whirlwind innings from the skipper who ended up smashing eight fours and two sixes.
Joe Root scored a magnificent hundred to get England’s Champions Trophy campaign off to a winning start against Bangladesh. They looked far from threatening and management’s decision to go in with four specialist bowlers on a flat wicket did not help their cause.
Stokes was bowling the 32nd over against Bangladesh and on the third delivery, Tamim guided the ball to the third man boundary.
He and Hales milked the Bangladesh bowlers for all they were worth, barely breaking sweat in the process, a barrage of ones and twos punctuated by the odd drive, cut or pull to the fence.
Moeen Ali put down a straightforward chance in the same position, reprieving Soumya Sarkar, who was unable to take significant advantage before cutting a slow long-hop in Ben Stokes’ first over straight into the hands of Bairstow in the deep to end an opening stand of 56.
He combined for 166 with Mushfiqur Rahim, who was out for 79 straight after Tamim departed. As a score in the mid-300s looked possible, the pair fell in consecutive deliveries and Sabbir Rahman’s 15-ball 24 dragged them to 305-6.
But worryingly for England, bidding to win their first major International Cricket Council ODI trophy, paceman Chris Woakes bowled just two overs before suffering a potentially tournament-ending left side strain.
