A Winnipeg couple jumped out of a second-storey window with their four-month-old baby to escape an apartment fire Friday. In another apartment, Firefighters found one man unconscious, suffering life-threatening injuries.

First-arriving firefighters began an initial fire attack and search for trapped victims.

Firefighters also carried an unresponsive man from a burning apartment.

Team members received a report of a residential fire in the 200 block of Northwest 3rd Avenue at 1 AM. All three were taken to hospital. One apartment was completely destroyed and adjacent units were heavily damaged by smoke and water.

“Firefighters worked for almost 40 minutes to control the blaze and almost an hour more to douse hot spots and check for extension”, Ulven said Friday morning. Residents from at least 12 apartments have been displaced, and many are receiving temporary housing assistance from Red Cross.

Some apartments had working smoke alarms, but the complex did not have a fire sprinkler system.

Having a home evacuation plan and portable ladders in upper levels is also important, officials added.
