Woman ‘who cut unborn baby from expectant mother’s womb’ faces trial

February 21 02:24 2016

Prosecutors told jurors on Wednesday that a woman accused of cutting a 7-month-old fetus out of an expectant mother’s womb was “obsessed” with pregnancy in the months before the attack.

Defense attorneys say Lane attacked Wilkins on impulse and didn’t intend to kill her.

Prosecutors charged Lane with attempted first-degree murder, assault and unlawful termination of a pregnancy in the March 2015 attack of Michelle Wilkins.

Almost a year has passed since Michelle Wilkins had her unborn child “removed” from her womb during a heinous attack that occurred after she responded to a Craigslist ad offering free maternity clothes.

Lane said that her husband David Ridley – whom she was not legally married to – came home and she told him she had given birth, although she told police she had been feeling guilty for lying about being pregnant. Lane told investigators that it was Wilkins who had a knife and tried to stab her.

In the other major development of the Colorado trial yesterday, the judge ruled that the jury will not hear anything about the cause and manner of the death of Wilkins’s fetus, who did not survive the attack, since Lane is not charged in that death, the Denver Post reports. She remains in custody on a $2 million bond.

The defense has not examined numerous prosecution’s witnesses and it appears that they may rest tomorrow. He drove both Ms Lane and the baby to hospital, where she claimed she had miscarried before admitting the child was not hers.

She said: ‘She pinned down my arms with her legs and she was trying so hard to choke me and put the heel of her hand on my windpipe and remember everything going black’.

Prosectors say that the victim was hit with a lava lamp and her child was cut from her womb with two kitchen knives, as reported by The Telegraph. The defense theory is that Lane acted recklessly but did not plan to kill Wilkins.

Wilkins somehow managed to call 911, where an operator kept her on the phone and urged her to hold a towel to her stomach in hopes of stopping the blood that was pouring out of her body.

An audio recording of the call drew tears from members of her family and sighs from people as it was played inside the courtroom. She was expressionless throughout the day’s testimony, wearing a gray pantsuit and a blue button-down shirt.

Wilkins said she was then lured by Lane to a downstairs basement to look at more clothes. The trial resumes with closing arguments at 9 a.m. on Monday.

An attorney tells Denver7 Dynel Lane’s testimony to police in a recording was crucial for prosecutors as they wrapped up their case on Friday.

She realized she had been cut from hip to hip, and that her baby was gone.

If convicted, Lane could receive a sentence of over 100 years in prison.
