Women’s March Fills Washington, Cities Around US, World

January 22 06:52 2017

Business mogul Donald Trump was sworn as the nation’s 45th commander in chief on Friday, promising to return government to the people and return American might to the global stage.

The march was not limited to women, and was organized around a variety of women’s and liberal issues, as well as a show of opposition toward Trump.

Tomorrow, Jan. 21, a number of HollywoodLife staffers and I will be joining Women’s Marches in Washington, DC, NYC and LA.

The march, which began with a Facebook call by a Hawaiian grandmother in the aftermath of Trump’s election victory in November, spurred similar rallies in major cities across the country.

BOB BLAND, Co-Chair, Women’s March on Washington: We are bringing together women, men and allies from all different types of communities from all over the country to say that we’re standing in solidarity together to say that women’s rights are human rights.

A spokesman for the city’s Metro Police said 217 people were arrested after masked protesters attacked officers, vandalised shops and set parked cars and bins alight. In Seattle, on the University of Washington campus, a man was shot in the abdomen at a protest aiming to delay a sold-out event featuring Milo Yiannopoulos, the editor of the controversial right-wing news site Breitbart. Some of the largest rallies were held in Boston, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

But organizers said that interest was nearly immediate. It was cordoned off and empty on Saturday as protesters gathered on the Mall. Organizers said the turnout was even higher than the official estimate.

“We all joined with Donald Trump because we knew what he was going to say”, said Sparks, who served as Trump’s campaign chair in El Paso County.

Marches drew some 20,000 people in Houston and Phoenix each.

New Zealand and Australia were among the first countries in the world where women took to the streets.

Authorities will be on standby to prevent any repeat of violence that occurred after the inauguration ceremony on Friday, when protesters took to the streets in Washington, smashing windows of businesses and denouncing capitalism and the new president.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Some of the guiding principles that you have laid out seem to really place a lot of emphasis on the concerns of women of color, immigrant women.

After his “American carnage” inauguration speech – slammed around the world as divisive, dark and chilling – Trump’s next moves were to fulfil some campaign vows.

The janitors, who are members of the Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha (CTUL), said contract workers with Kimco Services who clean about a dozen Home Depot stores in the area are not working Friday as a protest against low wages and a lack of benefits.

Marches are also taking place throughout the United Kingdom, including in Belfast, Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester and Edinburgh.

The day after the US election, a plan was hatched to march on Washington.
