WWE ‘Royal Rumble’ Has Long, Weird History of Surprises

Ambrose, who won more TV matches than any other superstar in 2016 and wrestled more matches than any other superstar, too, may very well be one of those full-time workhorses who gets the shaft come WrestleMania time, where he’s forced to work a crowded midcard match instead of a high-profile singles bout.

There’s little doubting that if the Olympic hero ended his lengthy exile from WWE on Sunday night, it would be one of the biggest moments in the event’s history.

He could fight The Undertaker, or he could end up winning the whole thing and going after the holder of the WWE Universal Championship.

It’s not the only time WWE has dropped the ball in the wake of the “women’s revolution”: both Raw and SmackDown lacked even one women’s match this past week, and last June’s Money in the Bank sorely missed a titular match featuring the women’s division. Angle recently said he wants one more match with AJ Styles. Braun Strowman, WWE’s pet monster heel who first appeared as the fourth member of the Wyatt family, could also be a surprising yet believable victor. I’m going to put the Royal Rumble match in the main event slot (Segment 6), which means John Cena will get either Segment 4 or Segment 5, depending on whether or not WWE wants to stick a cool-down match between them.

The biggest potential surprise entrant in Sunday’s battle royal is easily Kurt Angle. Once it was known that Goldberg would be sticking around past Survivor Series, the company realized that their WrestleMania 33 match was going to happen.

With the Royal Rumble just around the corner, and this year sees The Undertaker returning to the event, let’s take a look at who should eliminate him from the Royal Rumble. According to the rumor reports, he will capture his first major singles title at the Elimination Chamber in February. “If you don’t think I did, then you’re not a fan of the business”. If Reigns tops Owens, Strowman could get the nod, but it would be a surprise. The WWE views him as the top cruiserweight on the roster.
