Yanks work to sign recently cut 1B Davis

The Yankees are on the verge of signing Ike Davis to a major-league deal, according to a source with knowledge of Davis’ plans. The odds of Davis ever being called up to the Major League club was as likely as him ever hitting over.300 for a full season in the big leagues.

By adding Davis to the team, the Yankees will have to cut someone from the 25-man roster. That came together quickly. The left-handed corner infielder was released from his minor-league contract with the Rangers earlier in the day before reports surfaced that the Yankees had inked him to a deal.

Davis hit 32 home runs for the Mets in 2012 and in six big league seasons has hit.239.

He saw a limited role with the Oakland Athletics last season, hitting.229 with three home runs. Power is Davis’s calling card.

Rob Refsynder, New York’s current starting first baseman, had never played the position before last month.

Problem being for the Rangers, they are stockpiled with better – and sometimes even younger – talent at the first base position. The team has also lost starter Mark Teixeira and a pair of reserves – Chris Parmelee and Dustin Ackley – to the disabled list in recent weeks, and will now hope to draw production from Davis. Rob Refsynder is now the starting first baseman, a position he only began to play within the last month. The Yankees have Nick Swisher playing first at Triple-A, but he has yet to force the issue with his bat.
