Public health officials say the risk for Canadians is low and limited to those who travel or live in regions where the virus is circulating.

Zika is now present in 23 countries and territories in the Americas. In conclusion, the minister assures Nigerian that there is no single case of Zika virus infection in the country and there is no need to panic.

World Health Organization said European countries should be ready to detect and manage Zika infection in travellers from affected countries.

The National Health Institute said that 1,050 of Colombia’s Zika infection cases were confirmed by laboratory tests, 17,115 by clinical exams, and 2,132 were suspected cases.

All were infected while they were traveling overseas, according to Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is advising pregnant women to avoid travel in areas where Zika is active.

Zika is most commonly passed on through the “Aedes aegypti” mosquito. While clinical trials may be able to begin before the end of this year, there will not be a widely available vaccine for several years.

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat the disease.
